As we enter Women’s History month, it only feels right to jam out to songs about powerful women, by powerful women. All of these songs are confidence-boosting reminders that women are powerful and that it’s our time to shine.

Run the World (Girls) – Beyoncé

I mean, duh, this is the kind of anthem I’m talking about. This song, and Queen Bey, instill incredible confidence from the very first note. The repetition of the strong chorus, followed by the lyrics that are so relatable, is incredible. She even calls out all of us seniors who are about to graduate: “Help me raise a glass for the college grads.” But oh, Beyoncé, we want to raise a glass for you.

Dumb Blonde – Dolly Parton
We’ve all heard the stereotype, but who cares what color our hair is? That’s what Dolly Parton thinks, too. The message of this song is to not make assumptions about people based on how they look, and while it’s technically a breakup song, it is so empowering in all facets of life. Women are often underestimated, but to those who undervalue us, we say, “Just because I’m blonde don’t think I’m dumb, ‘cause this dumb blonde ain’t nobody’s fool.”

Woman – Kesha

After taking her career back from her manager, Kesha came out with powerful songs that showed her freedom and her fire— this was one of them. This song is about the innate power that comes with being a woman. Personally, I find it therapeutic to belt out with friends. Like Kesha says, “I’m
just having fun with my ladies here tonight.” Girl’s night soon, Kesha?

BO$$ – Fifth Harmony

This is a personal throwback to early high school when I didn’t have a great concept of being my own ‘boss’ (let’s face it, I couldn’t even drive), but that didn’t stop me from singing this song. This is a banger about working hard for what you want, and I do indeed feel “C-O-N-F-I-D-E-N-T” when I sing it.

S.L.U.T. – Bea Miller

Don’t let the title throw you off. The acronym stands for “sweet little unforgettable thing.” I love this song and its title because it takes a word that is typically negative and offensive and turns it into a powerful statement. This song is about loving yourself for who you are despite what others think. Like the song says, “Cause your happiness don’t need a censor.” So, let us be confident and happy women.
