The 70s are back in style: there are enough flare pants, chunky heels, halter tops, funky patterns and bright colors to go around. So why not bring back some music to accompany the revival of the times?
People love to hate it, but it’s time to bring back disco. Seriously, what’s to hate about music purely meant to get you to get up and jam? I don’t know, so here are some favorites to get you into a silly, goofy mood and get grooving:
Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker) – Parliament
You simply can’t have a disco playlist without Parliament, or without George Clinton (the master of all things funk). This timeless classic fueled by some seriously groovy background synths will be sure to get you up and busting down on the dance floor.
I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor
I’m willing to say this is the best breakup recovery song ever produced. No. This is the best song, in general, ever produced. I will not be taking criticism at this time. The fast-paced beat with a fabulous production of both string and wind orchestral music, mixed with Gaynor’s vocals, makes anyone feel like the most powerful person on earth.
Got to Be Real – Cheryl Lynn
The only song that could compete with “I Will Survive,” is this song. If you’ve ever seen the iconic 2004 hit, “Shark Tale” starring Will Smith, you have probably gone absolutely feral to this song while you were eating a GoGurt on your couch past your bedtime. Let’s also not forget the car wash scene (speaking of, here’s another disco banger: “Car Wash” by Rose Royce).
Boogie Wonderland – Earth, Wind & Fire
Trying to pick just a single Earth, Wind & Fire song for this playlist was perhaps the worst decision ever. But, since we all know “September” and “Let’s Groove” (if you don’t, we need to talk), “Boogie Wonderland” is the exact song you’d want on a playlist while pretending to be on the dance floor at Studio 54.
Disco Inferno – The Trammps
I’m pretty sure this song recently blew up on TikTok for a week or two. But, as popular as this song gets, and as many bad covers it may get from the Glee cast, it never gets old. Not to mention, this classic disco group was based in our very own Philadelphia.
Le Freak – CHIC
POV: You’re a famous Vogue model in 1978 posing for the camera in a New York City studio, fixing your bell bottom jeans and spraying so much hairspray, you start to taste it. This song is playing in the background. You’re on top of the world. Give this disco classic a listen and if that’s not how this song makes you feel, then I don’t know what to tell you.
