What are some of the best places around campus to sit outside as the weather gets nicer?

          -Megan C. ’23

Dear Megan,

Spring is by far the best time to hang out on campus, so this is a great question. I’d say where you want to sit depends on what you want to do. The three things that come to mind for me are working, socializing and sunbathing.

For getting work done, I especially like the tables outside the library because you have a flat surface and a beautiful view of Barbelin Hall and Sweeney Field. As spring progresses, the flowered trees will begin to bloom, which makes the view even more picturesque.

The tables next to the Science Center are another great option and tend to be quieter than those that line the perimeter of the library.

Keep in mind, working outside can be tricky because of the wind, so you’ll want to bring work on a computer or in bound books if you’re planning to sit there for a while.

For socializing, some shady places that are easily forgotten and tend to have seats open are the gazebo between the Science Center and Campion Student Center, as well as the courtyard on the side of Villiger Hall that faces Campion. My personal favorite is the picnic table that’s tucked away behind the back corner of the Drexel Library.

Though they lack a flat surface, the benches in the courtyard next to Merion Hall get a lot of direct sunlight in the afternoon. There is also less stress in the air on that side of campus, as you are away from the Science Center and the Library.

If you are planning to have a cup of coffee with a friend, any of the aforementioned places would work, and I would add the picnic tables in the Campion courtyard to the list, as long as you aren’t bothered that some of them don’t sit on flat land. They are conveniently central to campus, but beware: there are bees in the vicinity, which I had an unfortunate encounter with this past fall.

Lastly, if your goal is to soak up some vitamin D, look no further than the Villiger Hall lawn or the McShain Hall lawn. Don’t forget to bring a blanket to lounge on, maybe even a speaker, and let the good vibes roll.

Don’t forget that the spring temperatures are fickle; it can be deceivingly chilly on an overcast or windy day and then unexpectedly hot and bright the next. I recommend having a light jacket, sunglasses and hat on hand so that you’re always prepared.

Whatever your activity, I hope you find a great spot to sit!
