It’s election season! The Hawk asked this year’s University

Student Senate (USS) executive board candidates to share a little bit about themselves and their platforms. Voting will be held on the Nest from 8 a.m. on April 27 through 5 p.m. on April 28.

Julia Butler ‘23

Biography

Julia Butler is a rising senior from Connecticut majoring in marketing with a minor in business intelligence and analytics. Butler has been a member of USS since her first year at St. Joe’s, first serving as Alumni Chair and then Speaker on the executive board for the past two years. Other than USS, Butler is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the Dean’s Leadership Program and Alpha Phi Fraternity.

My Platform

Over the past two years, we have come together as a community to face adversity. As we continue to navigate difficult times, it is my desire to unite campus in order to boost morale and define our evolving identity. I am a firm believer that as young adults we are constantly changing and that the same should stand for the institution in which we attend. I am running for President to serve as a reliable representative of your needs, desires and concerns. I promise that I will work tirelessly to ensure that everyone feels heard and seen at SJU.

Gabby Santos ‘23

Biography

Gabby Santos is a rising senior from Warren Township, New Jersey majoring in business administration with a minor in Spanish. Santos is a Resident Assistant, Service Scholar through the Faint Justice Institute and the current secretary of Student Affairs through USS.

My Platform

I will strive to make decisions that certify the values of our collective student body. I promise an environment of inclusion and a reliable Student Senate that can maintain transparency around policy and the inner workings of our university leadership. This serious demeanor will be balanced with student events sponsored by Student Senate to maintain morale on campus.

Christopher Maffuid ‘23

Biography

Christopher Maffuid is a rising senior from Connecticut, majoring in business intelligence and analytics, machine learning and finance. Maffuid considers himself an entrepreneur and is passionate about embarking on new business journeys, such as the small business he started last year. Apart from USS, Maffuid is the president of the student budget allocation committee, helps at weekly masses and teaches the stock market through his work study.

My Platform

Managing funds on behalf of students may not be the most glamorous of duties, but it is one I take seriously. I realize that student leaders and their respective organizations need support to accomplish their goals. I strive to streamline the avenues frequented by these university stakeholders to make them efficient and inclusive. This will be achieved through better communication, transparency and attention to student engagement.
