Happy Black History Month! This week’s Hawk Recs all center on some of the best from Black entertainers.

Song of the week: “ALIEN SUPERSTAR” by Beyoncé

When international superstar Beyoncé dropped this electric dance song in the summer of 2022, it was an instant hit. Many people across the internet were jamming to this song and creating videos with it. This song has an easily recognizable beat and catchy lyrics with self-affirmations to boost your self-esteem, like “I’m too classy for this world, forever. I’m that girl.” If you want a reminder of how truly unique you are, listen to this song off of Beyoncé’s album “Renaissance.”

Binge-worthy TV show: “Abbott Elementary”

This laugh-out-loud mockumentary on ABC was created by Philadelphia’s very own Quinta Brunson. It is a comedic reality show following the lives of teachers at a Philadelphia elementary school. It shows all the ups and downs of what it’s really like to be a teacher in an underfunded school district between managing their own lives and doing what’s best for their students. The show has many funny and heartfelt moments that viewers of all ages can relate to.

Must-see movie: “Love & Basketball”

From childhood rivals to lovers and rivals once again, this 2000s film follows the rollercoaster relationship of Quincy, played by Omar Epps and Monica, played by Sanaa Lathan, two very passionate college basketball players attending the same college. Watch as they try to handle the pressures of being a college athlete, maintaining their relationship and dealing with their own individual life drama. Will they stay together? Or will they crack under the pressure and break up? Watch Quincy and Monica’s journey in this movie available to stream on HBO Max.
