“Fair Play” is a psychological thriller directed by Chloe Domont. The Netflix original stars Phoebe Dynevor as Emily and Alden Ehrenreich as Luke. The film follows the couple as their relationship begins to deteriorate after Emily receives an unexpected promotion at her job. This new position exposes her to the cutthroat realities of the modern corporate world.

Both Emily and Luke soon witness instances of sabotage and cruelty within the workplace as Emily’s success leaves Luke feeling envious. Domont presents an unsettling portrait of office politics, populated by a countless number of selfish and unkind characters that capture the competitive nature of sales. As a result, tensions slowly build between the once-engaged couple. Dynevor and Ehrenreich deliver gripping performances, showcasing the dissolving connection between their characters. What begins as passive aggressive comments escalates into outright offensive and sexist insults.

Their dialogue during heated arguments becomes confusing and disjointed, making it difficult to follow at times, especially when industry terms are used. However, the core of the story lies in watching Emily and Luke’s relationship transform from one of love and support to anger and resentment. Fueled by Luke’s growing envy of Emily’s career achievement, their dynamic becomes irreparably unhealthy.

With thought-provoking themes touching on gender inequity, fragile masculinity and workplace abuse, “Fair Play” offers a nuanced portrayal of psychological deterioration for both of the main characters. The film presents an unsettling yet compelling twisted love story that explores the dark ways envy can alter interpersonal relationships for better or worse.
