The ’90s are back, bringing with them Mom jeans, slip dresses and corsets. But one of the best returning trends is for the hair: the claw clip.

The ’90s claw clip was inspired by the ’80s banana clip. Curved with prongs that clip together, banana clips are generally used to wrap hair in a ponytail while claw clips have larger prongs that are able to hold hair in a variety of ways.

Typically made of plastic, the claw clip can range in a variety of colors and shapes. They generally retail for $2 to $10, depending on whether you are buying a single clip or a pack.

Allison Gambrino ’25 said she sees the clips advertised on Instagram and TikTok, which have helped propel the trend. These social media platforms typically offer tutorials on how to use or style the claw clips.

“I saw them as a big trend on social media, and I just like putting my hair up,” Gambrino said.

Emily Merlucci ’25 said she enjoys the product’s ease of use. She can simply twist her hair upward, then secure it with the claw clip.

“It’s easy, and it doesn’t damage your hair or anything, so it’s quick,” Merlucci said.

Cameron Fisco, a hairstylist enrolled in the TIGI Hairdressing Academy in Guilford, Connecticut, said claw clips are definitely making their way back, and are a healthy method to pull back hair.

“Not only are they a versatile way to style your hair, they are stylish and healthier than other styles,” Fisco said.

Fisco also confirmed claw clips can be better for hair than other types of ties, including scrunchies, another ’90s hair accessory enjoying a comeback.

“I have a big understanding on just how fragile hair can be and how bad elastic hair ties can be,” Fisco said. “Claw clips are a way more gentle and forgiving alternative.”

Natalia Pereira ’24, who works at Francesca’s, a fashion store located in Ardmore, said claw clips are a huge seller at her store.

“People of all ages come in and buy them, and it’s probably our most popular hair accessory,” Pereira said. “They come in all colors [and] styles. We literally have four huge bins full of claw clips.”

Pereira said claw clips are a great accessory.

“I feel it can add something to your outfit,” Pereira said. “Just a pop of color to tie it all in.”
