“Top Gun: Maverick” is a nostalgic, high-flying, action-packed joyride filled with tear-jerking moments and adrenaline-rushing action sequences shot with some of the best practical cinematography in the industry. “Maverick” was directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie. The film stars Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer and Miles Teller.

The long awaited sequel to the original 1986 “Top Gun” follows the story of one of the Navy’s best aviators, Peter “Maverick” Mitchell, played by Cruise, who has spent the past 30 years as a test pilot for the military whilst avoiding the promotions that would ground him. Soon enough, Maverick is enlisted to train an elite group of young fighter pilot graduates for a dangerous mission involving an unsanctioned uranium enrichment plant guarded by mysterious enemies.

One of the things that stood out the most about “Top Gun: Maverick” were the nostalgic call backs to the original. The film opens with Kenny Loggins’ 1986 hit “Danger Zone,” the iconic theme song from the original. Other callbacks range from closeup shots of old photos depicting scenes from the original to flashbacks, musical numbers and familiar interactions between characters. Even the most daunting moment of the final action sequence was inspired by a tragic scene from the first “Top Gun”

Each remembrance helps push the plot forward and gives the film a motivational and moving tone that is supported by amazing performances from the great Teller – and Cruise himself. Teller, who plays Rooster, is no stranger to outperforming his competition amongst big stars. His character offers an amazing portrayal of a naive young rookie who develops into a lethal pilot with laser sharp reflexes and a heart of gold.

Kilmer, who plays Iceman, returns in a limited capacity. During the second act, he shares a heartwarming scene with Cruise that does a respectful job of demonstrating their newfound comradery. He motivates Maverick to rise above his inner doubts and fears to take up his responsibility as a mentor to his students.

Cruise sold yet another groundbreaking performance that’s more than worthy of an Academy Award. His portrayal of Maverick is yet another reminder of why he’s one of the greatest actors to take over the silver screen.

And what would “Top Gun: Maverick” be without stunning visuals? The action sequence at the end had my eyes glued to the screen, praying for the characters to survive. The final battle sequence displays some of the best stunt work I’ve seen in 2022.

This film was a thrilling, unforgettable theater experience. “Top Gun: Maverick” persevered through a two-year delay due to the pandemic, on top of a decades-long separation from the original, and it was well worth the wait.
