On Jan. 25, senior guard Cameron Brown scored a layup just over three minutes into St. Joe’s game against George Washington to reach his 1,000 career points milestone. He is the 58th player in program history to reach this milestone.

For Brown, it was just another basket to keep the Hawks in the game.

“I didn’t know it was my 1,000 points going into the game,” Brown said. “I was just focused on the game, trying to help us get a win that day.”

It wasn’t until Head Coach Billy Lange congratulated Brown, that he realized his accomplishment.

“It didn’t hit me until the next day,” Brown said. “It was pretty cool that I got to 1,000 points.”

Lange said that Brown has been committed to building the program for four years, while going through a rebuilding process and covid-19.

“He’s a guy that likes to lead and wants to help build something,” Lange said. “No one is more deserving of an honor and a milestone of 1,000 points than a guy that has shown that level of commitment.”

Sophomore guard, Erik Reynolds II, said that Brown’s attributes as a leader have helped his teammates throughout the season.

“He’s an amazing teammate,” Reynolds said. “He really shows you that he believes in you.”

Reynolds said that the team’s trust in Brown’s abilities keeps their heads in
the game.

“We know that mistakes are gonna happen throughout the game, but knowing that a teammate like him has my back helps me keep going,” Reynolds said.

According to Brown, it is this trust from coaches and teammates that has contributed to his improvement throughout his four seasons. Brown has put up 293 points so far this season and has averaged  14 points per game, surpassing his 250 points and 8.3 points per game last season.

“Trust from my teammates and hard work put in over the years is paying off,” Brown said, “Hard work is really all that you can sum it up to.”

Lange said that Brown’s leadership in the locker room is what gains him respect from his teammates on the court.

“He sees value in every player on the team,” Lange said. “He cares about them, he respects them, he elevates them, he serves them.”

Brown said the confidence from his coaches and teammates has made him grow in his confidence as well.

“When your teammates and coaches got your back, like everybody has my back, and like I have everybody else’s back, the sky’s the limit, honestly,” Brown said.

Brown’s teammates are also hoping that the sky’s the limit for him.

“We want him to score more,” Reynolds said. “We joke about it. We want him to get to 2,000 [points].”

Brown said this desire for more from his teammates has been motivating all season and assists him in improving in his performance.

“They believe in every shot I take,” Brown said. “They believe in what I say to them. They trust that I know where I’m going to be on the floor and know what I’m doing.”

According to Lange, this trust in Brown is due to the knowledge he has demonstrated during his time with the Hawks.

“His corporate knowledge and understanding of everything that we’re trying to do both in the locker room and on the court is irreplaceable,” Lange said. “There will never be another guy like Cam. He’s not repeatable.”
