The Saint Joseph’s women’s basketball team earned a berth in the WNIT this week after going 1-1 in the Atlantic 10 Tournament last week. With a first round game on Thursday, the Hawks will play VCU in the first postseason tournament for either basketball team sine the 2007-2008 men’s team.
A little rain was not enough to stop the Saint Joseph’s women’s rowing team from getting on the Schuylkill River this past Saturday. Neither did 25 mile per hour winds, a high-rising river, and a speedy current. Despite conditions that shut down other events on the river Saturday, the women’s rowing team kicked off its 2010 spring season in style, beating the elements and competitors, marking six straight season-opening victories for the Hawks.
For their Spring Break, the Saint Joseph’s softball team spent a week in Clearwater, FL. After playing various opponents, they ended the week by participating in the University of Southern Florida Under Armour Showcase. Overall, the Hawks finished with two wins in five games on the week.
This past week had its ups and downs for the Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball team. The Hawks began the week with their backs against the wall. Win and St. Joe’s would make the Atlantic 10 tournament; lose and the Hawks are one of only two teams in the conference to not make the trip to the tourney.
This past week saw the conclusion of the men’s and women’s indoor track season in Boston, Mass. Neither of the teams was able to send a member to the NCAA Championships that were held this past Friday and Saturday. From this season, both teams learned valuable lessons and will look to improve and move forward.
While the rest of the campus was on Spring Break, the Saint Joseph’s baseball team was hard at work on a trip out west. Last Wednesday, they were in warm, sunny Tuscon, Ariz. to take on the Arizona Wildcats in a doubleheader. Much like the rest of this young season, not much went the Hawks’ way.
During Spring Break, the Saint Joseph’s men’s and women’s tennis teams made their way to Orlando, Fl. to play matches against the Creighton Jays and South Dakota State Jackrabbits on March 10 and 11, respectively. While both teams found success against South Dakota State, they both also struggled mightily against Creighton, winning only one game combined in their matches against the Jays.
This past week, one of my favorite players of the late 1990s/ early 2000s retired: Nomar Garciaparra. While I was quite sad to see him ride off into the sunset to watch World Cup matches this summer with his lovely wife, Mia Hamm, I do want to thank Nomar for inspiring my column this week.
Soccer fans in Philadelphia are ready for the dawn of the Union franchise, but it may be another union they should keep their eyes on. That would be Major League Soccer’s Players’ Union, which decided last week to strike if a new labor contract isn’t in place by the season opener on March 25.
There are many times in a season when a team will face adversity. Whether it happens during a game, over a series of games, or over a series of seasons, adversity is inevitably present in the world of sports. The Saint Joseph’s women’s lacrosse team is in the midst of an exhausting fight between triumph and adversity.
The Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse team took on Brown University and the University of Pennsylvania this week and unfortunately fell to both teams. They fell to Penn by a score of 16-5 and to Brown by a score of 18-4. Coming off a loss against Rutgers, the Hawks were looking to get their first win on the season against city rival Penn on Wednesday.
The Saint Joseph’s golf team will begin their spring season with one goal in mind: improving on the fall. After a season that saw the Hawks’ best result in a tie for fifth in September, head coach Bob Lynch and the team traveled down to Florida over spring break in an attempt to prepare themselves for a better season.
