Five hours away from taking the last final exam of his college career, senior Bill Gwynn, a food marketing major, sat calmly with his friends in the kitchen of Wolfington Hall.
"I don't think it has really hit me yet," said Gwynn, as he thought about his four years at St. Joe's. "I'm really going to miss the 'in-betweens,' not the parties or the classes, but the moments that you can't really define."
In October, Gwynn will begin a 10-month volunteer program with AmeriCorps NCCC, a national service organization that works with non-profit and faith-based organizations to strengthen communities. After training in Sacramento for a month, Gwynn will travel to new projects every six weeks, ranging from disaster relief in the Gulf Coast to environmental clean-up.
Before venturing off to the West Coast, Gwynn has big plans for his summer. He said that he likes to challenge himself in a different way every summer. Two years ago he went skydiving, and last summer, he participated in a 70-mile bike tour.
"I'm thinking I might wrestle a bear," he said with a humorous smirk.
While Gwynn may not wrestle a bear anytime soon, he may get the chance to see one. In September, he will hike solo up part of the Appalachian Trail, about 100 miles.
"It will be a good reflective period," Gwynn said. "I'll be able to wrap up all my thoughts about college and get ready for AmeriCorps and the real world."
Service was a big part of Gwynn's college career. This year he was a leader for the Appalachian Experience trip, sponsored by St. Joe's Campus Ministry. He was also vice president of Students for Peace and Justice.
"My Appalachian Experience trip last year was the changing point in my life that helped me get more involved with service," Gwynn said. "Every service trip is full of different and new experiences."
Almost immediately after graduation, Gwynn will travel to Ecuador as part of Campus Ministry's Summer Immersion Program. He also has an internship with Jersey Fresh, a project of the New Jersey Department of Agriculture that involves buying locally farmed goods. In the midst of all of this, Gwynn, a devoted baseball fan, also wants to fit in a tour of local minor league baseball stadiums.
When asked to define his time at St. Joe's in one sentence, Gwynn had to stop and think for a few minutes.
"I don't think that you can sum it up in one sentence," Gwynn finally said. "I don't think that it can be summed up in anything, to tell you the truth."
