Not Selling Any Alibis: Taking breaks important during finals week

Spring has finally arrived. After months of dreary, wet, depressing winter, we can finally study like we were meant to-outside on the grass and in the sun. Why have laptops, after all, if they were just going to stay in our rooms while we study at our desks?

But with the arrival of true spring comes something a little less enjoyable for students: finals.

The most important thing to avoid during finals is disease. Nothing kills a student's chances of doing well on a final exam like some sickness picked up the day before.

We're all going to be going through a lot of stress, and staying up late studying or spending time grouped with hundreds of other students in the library doesn't do much for your chances of avoiding illness.

Believe it or not, it's still flu season, and getting hit with the flu right when you should be studying for your finals is never fun. Pinkeye has also been making its way around campus. There's nothing less enjoyable than attempting to read a book while your eye is itching like crazy. So wash your hands, take your vitamins, and stay away from Hot Pocket meals for dinner. Eat and act healthfully, and more likely than not, you'll stay healthy.

There's also the all-important "fun" aspect to consider. Preparing for final exams is bad during the fall semester, but there is one saving grace-at least there's nothing to do outside, either. The bad weather eliminates longing looks out the window and allows students to concentrate on their work.

Spring semester is much worse. Students lying on the grass in front of the library will have the noise from people playing sports on Finnesey Field to contend with, and students managing to barricade themselves inside the library will be forced to deal with the bright flowers, green grass, and sun outside, in addition to the stuffiness the library always seems to acquire when good weather arrives.

And yet some dedicated students will manage to devote their last few weeks of school to studying for their finals. I think we can all respect that. For the most part, they tend to be biology, chemistry, or math students, and people in those majors are used to the intense amount of work required to maintain good grades in their courses.
