Letter: Security deserves credit for assisting students during West Philadelphia burglary spree
Issue date: 4/23/08 Section: Opinion
To the Editor:
During my four years as a student at St. Joe's, Public Safety and Security has received a lot of bad press.
It's easy to dislike Security when you're walking to your car and see that infamous white slip of paper under your windshield wiper, or when you can't get a ride to that off-campus party.
My relationship with Security, not unlike that of the majority of the student body, has been acrimonious at best…until last week.
As you may or may not be aware, a string of burglaries has terrorized students living in off-campus housing on the West Philadelphia side of campus during the past week, including myself and my five roommates who share a home on Wynnefield Avenue.
In the midst of ensuing chaos, I feel compelled to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to Security for their relentless support and kindness.
Since being displaced, Security has done everything in their power to help us during this difficult time. They've sent patrol cars to sit outside the house while we move out the rest of our belongings and provided temporary parking permits.
The exemplary officers, supervisors, and administrators who have shown honest care and concern, especially Cliff Ruley and Regina Reyes, deserve our utmost appreciation.
I personally feel a newfound sense of community with the university as Security has provided a "home away from home" during this difficult time. It is extremely comforting to know that when you're in a real emergency, help and support exists in places you never thought possible.
I have realized that Security isn't our enemy; they are our allies and they are here to protect and serve the students of Saint Joseph's in every moment of every day.
