Martino's seven goals were not enough to lead the Hawks to victory against Duquesne.

The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team left Finnesey Field on April 12 with a frustrating loss against UMass by a score of 9-8. The one-goal loss was the fourth such loss for the Hawks this season. This may be the toughest to swallow, however, after the Hawks held a 6-4 lead entering half and had a critical goal disallowed in the waning minutes of the contest.

Six scorers combined for the eight Hawk goals, including Helene Tursi, '09, and Jessica Westlake, '09, who scored two apiece. Lindsey-Kate McCool, '08, Jenna Martino, '10, Christina Colangelo, '08, and Abby Renninger, '08, each added a goal. McCool also assisted on the opening goal, scored by Renninger, as well as on a second half tally by Tursi.

Both goalies played well, keeping it a relatively low-scoring affair. UMass goalie Krissy Anderson saved 12 out of the 20 shots on goal by the Hawks. The Hawks goalie Suzy Herlihy, '09, made five saves. Both teams tried to settle the ball on offense to get good scoring opportunities in a game in which the largest lead for either side was just two goals.

In the first half, the Hawks got onto the board in the first five minutes from a Renninger goal. UMass struck back just over a minute later to tie the score. With 17:04 remaining in the first half, Westlake scored, only to be countered by a UMass goal 1:02 later. Colangelo scored the third St. Joe's goal to give them a 3-2 lead with 13:53. UMass did not back down and once again returned the favor with a goal just 18 seconds later to tie the score at 3-3. The Hawks built up momentum in the final 10 minutes of the half, going on a 3-1 run in that span with goals by Martino, McCool and Tursi to go up 6-4 entering half.

The biggest lead of the game for the Hawks would quickly disappear after they returned to the field to start the second half. UMass scored two goals in the opening 1:37 to erase the Hawk lead and kill the momentum the Hawks had coming from the end of the first half. UMass followed up with a third unanswered goal at the 19:07 mark to give themselves their first lead of the game at 7-6.

Tursi entered halftime scoring the last Hawk goal and came out to score the first goal of the second half for St. Joe's. The goal tied the game at 7-7 with 14:39 to play, and ended the Hawks scoring drought of over 18 minutes. But once again UMass was able to follow up with a quick goal, as just 28 seconds later Kelly Shreiner scored to restore a one-goal lead.
