Christina Colangelo, '08, scored four goals, and Courtney McManama, '08, and Abby Renninger, '08, both added hat tricks to pace the Hawks to an 11-9 win. Kelly Huether, '09, assisted on three Hawk goals while Jenna Martino, '10, added a goal and two assists.
Defensively, Colleen Ingelsby, '08, picked up five ground balls and led the team with three caused turnovers in the win. Colangelo and Lindsey-Kate McCool, '08, helped the Hawks get possession off of draws, as the two combined for seven of the team's 12 controls.
Suzy Herlihy, '09, made 10 saves in goal for the Hawks (7-5, 2-1 A-10), and received strong support from Meghan Cullinan, '09, and Christine Readinger, '11, in defense and Ingelsby at midfield. Saint Joseph's successfully cleared the ball on 13 out of 15 attempts.
The Hawks pounced on the Explorers early, getting out to a 4-0 lead midway through the first half. Colangelo tallied three of her four goals in the run, and Renninger added her first of three goals on the day.
Suzy Herlihy and the Hawk defense played nearly 25 minutes of shutout lacrosse before an Explorer goal made the game 4-1 just before the half.
In the final minute of the first half, St. Joe's scored three times to make the score 7-2 at half. Colangelo had three of her four goals in that first half, while the other four goals were accounted for by McManama and Renninger with two each. La Salle was determined to make it a game when they came out of halftime, scoring the first three goals of the second half and four out of the first five to make the score 8-6 with 10:31 to play.
Martino answered the Explorer run with a goal of her own with less than nine minutes left. Within two minutes of Martino's goal, Huether created opportunities for the Hawks, assisting on the next two goals to push the margin back to five with 6:59 to play.
The Explorers did not go away, though, as they scored the final three goals of the game. But time ran out on the Explorers' run as they could get no closer than two goals.
Martino and Huether were the only Hawks to register assists for St. Joe's, who had six unassisted goals. Colangelo took advantage of her free position opportunities, scoring two goals off such shots. Colangelo scored her four goals off of seven shots, while McManama hit the twine on all three of her shot attempts.
The Hawks have four games remaining on their schedule, all of which are A-10 contests. They host hosts Massachusetts (3-9, 1-2 A-10) on April 11.
The Minutewomen's record is deceiving as they have played a tough schedule. They have already played six games against nationally-ranked teams in the top 20.
The Hawks currently sit alone in third place in the A-10 behind Temple and Richmond. A win over UMass would be the strongest win of the A-10 season so far for the Hawks.
