The spring sports season is in full swing, and the intramural teams at Saint Joseph's are no exception. A handful of teams are currently in the middle of their seasons, including men's rugby, men's volleyball, roller hockey, and men's lacrosse.
The men's rugby team is currently 5-1 on the season. Most of their victories have been lopsided, with routs of Shippensburg, 47-12, Temple, 41-8, and Loyola (Md.), 37-12. Also mixed in is a 29-12 victory over Widener. The victory over Philadelphia rival Temple is especially significant, as it is the first such win in four years.
The recently finished second in the Philadelphia Cup. They defeated Catholic University in the semifinals before falling to Pittsburgh in a hard-fought 10-7 game in the finals. Their next match is at a huge meeting with Albright College, who was ranked fourth in the nation and only narrowly defeated St. Joe's during the fall portion of the season, on April 12.
The men's volleyball team finished second in their division this season with a 7-5 overall record, including a 5-1 mark in the division to earn a spot in the playoffs. Their most recent victory came over rival Villanova.
The roller hockey teams have continued their stellar play on the road to the playoffs. The A-team finished the regular season as the second seed in the Philadelphia College Roller Hockey League (PCRHL) Tier 1 with an 11-3-0-2 record. Their final regular season victory came in a 10-3 drubbing of Temple behind four goals from Rob Moloney, '10, and three from Sean Kennedy, '09.
The roller hockey team has been led all year by Stan Tilton, '09, whose 28 goals rank him third in the PCRHL. Also finishing with double-digits goals are Moloney with 19 and Mike O'Rourke, '10, with 16. Tilton, defenseman Tim Hurley, '08, and goaltender PJ Troiano, '11, garnered All-Star nominations for their play this season.
"We finished strong and are the hottest team in the league right now," said head coach Steve Stunder. "We have five forwards who can score and no other team has that in this league. That will be hard to contain in the playoffs."
