The Saint Joseph's baseball team played two double headers this past week due to the weather. In their first double header, the Hawks lost both games to the Penn Quakers. The Hawks bounced back in their second double header, playing much better baseball and earning a split with the Fordham Rams. The finished out the week by winning the rubber game against Fordham to take the series.

In the first double-header against Penn, the Hawks put themselves behind the eight-ball early, giving up six runs in the first four innings in game one en route to a 6-2 loss. Jason Hessler, '09, took the loss, giving up seven hits in four innings. Only three of the runs were earned, with the other three coming after a Joe Cook, '11, error in the second. The Hawks scored runs in the sixth and seventh, but couldn't climb back all the way.

In game two, the Hawks' pitching was outmatched by the Quakers' bats once again, 16-5. The Hawks gave up 16 runs on 14 hits. Contributing to the loss was a dreadful defensive effort by the Hawks with four errors. Once again the Hawks dug themselves a hole, giving up six runs in the first three innings. Lefty Randy Mower, '10, took the loss for the Hawks, dropping him to 3-3 on the season.

In the second double-header of the week against the Fordham Rams, the Hawks improved in every aspect to earn the spilt. The win matched the Hawks' win total of last season with 10.

In game one, pitcher Dominic Favazza, '11, pitched well and kept the Hawks in the contest. He went six innings, giving up two earned runs. But Fordham struck late, tacking on six runs in the final three innings to put away the Hawks, 9-2.

The Hawks took that momentum into game two against the Rams and earned the win 6-4 to improve to 10-19 on the season. Mower went seven strong innings to get the win, his fourth of the season. The Hawks played a complete game using timely hitting and solid pitching to get the win. Two-out hitting sealed the win for the Hawks. The Hawks used three straight two-out singles by Ken Pustizzi, '09, Chris Hildreth, '09, and David Valesente, '10, to plate three runs in the seventh to take the lead for good. Chris Prescott, '09, took over in the eighth and ninth and recorded his second save of the season.

Brian Hartsell, '10, led the Hawks' offensive attack in the series-finale win over Fordham, 6-3. He recorded three hits, one RBI, and scored once. Mike Coleman, '11, also had a hit and scored three runs. Matt Barnathan, '10, was the only other Hawk with more than one hit, as they used a balanced attack with eight players accounting for 11 hits.

On the mound, Don Werner, '08, pitched six solid innings, giving up just two earned runs on three hits, but could only manage a no decision. Justin Trudell, '09, picked up his second win on the season by throwing two-thirds of an inning. Prescott closed things out for his third save of the year.
