On a Sunday trip to Dayton, the Saint Joseph's softball team was able to split a doubleheader with the Flyers and maintain an even conference record of 2-2.

In game one, Dani Gonzales, '09, delivered a stellar performance for the Hawks. She struck out 11 Dayton hitters on her way to a complete game shutout, keeping the Hawks tied with the Flyers as their offense sputtered for the first six innings.

Heading into the seventh inning, the game was still scoreless and seemed as if it would be that way for a few more innings with each team's starting pitcher still on the mound. Dana Bieniek, '11, was able to break the scoreless tie with a two-run double with one out in the inning. Bieniek was later doubled in by Erika Rosenwinkle, '09, to give the Hawks an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

Gonzales closed the door on the Flyers in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the victory.

The Hawks looked to take their momentum into game two of the day, but were thwarted by a walk-off home run by the Flyers' Megan Lee.

The first six innings went by in the same fashion for game two starter Lauren Cognigni, '08, as they did for Gonzales in game one. The Flyers' were once again perplexed by the Hawk staff and produced no runs on only two hits through six innings.

St. Joe's struck early, scoring a run in the first inning of the game. Rosenwinkle put herself in scoring position with a two-out double. Catcher Brooke Darreff, '10, singled in Rosenwinkle thanks in part to a misplay by the Dayton outfielder.

The Hawks' bats went silent after the first inning, and St. Joe's maintained their 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Cognigni was able to register the first two outs of the inning, surrendering only a base hit.

However, Lee approached the plate and was able to send a Cognigni pitch over the wall for a walk-off, two-out, two-run home run to give the Flyers a 2-1 victory.

With the loss, St. Joe's is now 5-12 on the year, unable to keep any momentum following their wins. The Hawks will next step out of conference for an April 2 game against Lafayette and then continue conference play with a weekend series against Saint Louis on April 4 and 5.
