The Saint Joseph's baseball team dropped two games of a three game series with a hot Temple team last week as the Hawks' in-conference struggles continued. St. Joe's now possesses a 9-16 record and have lost both conference series, lowering their record to 2-4.

In game one of the series, pitchers Dominic Favazza, '11, and Adam Rivera, '10, got tagged for five earned runs each. Favazza, the starter, lasted four innings, surrendering five hits and six walks despite striking out five. Rivera replaced him and only made it through 2.2 innings, allowing six runs, five hits, and a walk. Designated hitter Drew Smith, '10, and right fielder Ben Wendle, '09, drove in runs for the Hawks, who lost the game 13-2 to the visiting Owls.

The offense struggled again in game two but was bailed out by a strong performance from lefty Randy Mower, '10, who was recently named Atlantic 10 Co-pitcher of the Week on March 31. Mower threw a complete-game shutout, surrendering only three hits and one walk while striking out six Owl hitters. The win pushed Mower's personal record above the .500 mark to 3-2.

Aided by a plethora of Owl errors, St. Joe's broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and only one out, Jeremy Jakubowski, '08, reached on an error by pitcher Matt Mangiardini that forced home a run. David Valesente, '10, pushed across the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly and Smith slapped a single for the third and final run of the game.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, Mower's strong pitching performance did not influence the rest of the staff. The Hawks dropped game three by a count of 9-6.

Six pitchers combined for the nine runs against. Don Werner, '08, took the loss and most of the damage, giving up five runs-all earned-in 5.1 innings on eight hits.

Jakubowski was once again among the offensive leaders, driving in two runs on a 2-3 day from the plate. Valesente, Kenny Pustizzi, '08, and Chris Cashman, '08, all drove in one run apiece.

In the next week, the Hawks have a two-game series with Penn and another conference series with A-10 foe Fordham.
