Although the Hawks women's lacrosse team showed up in long sleeves and gloves in the chilly weather, it did not take long for the offense to heat up.
Jenna Martino, '10, earned control of the ball on the opening faceoff and the Hawks never looked back. Martino, Christina Colangelo, '08, and Abby Renninger, '08, each netted a hat trick to lead the Hawks' offense.
Suzy Herlihy, '09, continued her excellent play in goal with support from her defense, including a strong game from Meghan Cullinan. '09, who caused two turnovers and led the team with three groundballs, and Lindsey-Kate McCool, '08, who harassed Wildcat players on both ends of the field and picked a goal and an assist.
After halftime, Villanova needed a rally to get back in the game. But early in the period, Herlihy made three saves on a long Villanova possession, two of them resulting from free position shots.
The Wildcats never got closer than the halftime score as St. Joe's rolled to the easy victory. Herlihy had eight saves on the game to help the Hawks to advance to 4-2.
With seven minutes left, the Hawks were still pressuring the Wildcats. Colangelo intercepted a Villanova pass in Wildcat territory and went straight to the goal. Neither Colangelo's bandaged leg nor the Villanova players could slow her down as she finished the play to give the Hawks an 11-2 edge.
With teammates chanting her name at every draw, Jessica Westlake, '09, denied the Wildcats' comeback attempts. St. Joe's won draw controls by a count of 12-4, including a 7-0 advantage in the second half.
The Hawks only assisted on two of their 12 goals. Colangelo finished a shot off a Kelly Huether, '09, pass to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
The Hawks fifth through eighth goals all came off free position shots, and they were 5-5 total on free position shots.
Head coach Denise Roessler, in her ninth year as the Hawks head coach, spoke about the team's progress in the early part of the 2008 season.
