The Saint Joseph's softball team started the season with a win before proceeding to lose the next three games in a weekend tournament in Botetourte, Va. The Hawks defeated Troy in the opener, followed by losses to Winthrop, Rutgers, and Villanova.
Starting pitcher Lauren Cognigni, '08, has given the Hawks (1-3) two stellar performances on the mound, pitching her way through two complete games. She struck out eight and gave up four runs against Troy, earning the win. Despite getting credited with the loss against Rutgers, Cognigni pitched a shutout through the seven-inning game. However, with the score still dead-locked at zero, the Scarlet Knights were able to push across an unearned run with one out in the eighth for a walk-off 1-0 win. Cognigni struck out five and surrendered four hits over 7.1 innings.
The Hawk offense has thus far not been able to produce when necessary. St. Joe's was not able to support Cognigni in the 1-0 loss. Aside from that, the Hawks were soundly beaten in their two other games. Against Winthrop, St. Joe's only mustered two runs on seven hits in an 8-2 loss. In the weekend finale, the Hawks garnered four runs, unable to keep pace with the 10 scored by Villanova.
Offensively, the Hawks were led by Kelsey Moir, '08, who picked up five hits, two RBIs, and scored runs. She reached base out of the leadoff spot in the lineup in all four games. The main run producer for the Hawks was Dana Bieniek, '11, who had 5 RBIs on the weekend. Also contributing was Beka Shumock, '09, who had four hits, two runs, and an RBI. Also chipping in RBIs were Laura Cardone, '11, with two and Brooke Darreff, '10 with one.
Splitting time on the mound with Cognigni was Dani Gonzales, '09, who picked up the other two losses. She surrendered 14 runs (seven earned) in 11 innings on the rubber. Alyssa Neilson, '10, and Lauren Pembleton, '11, also logged innings for the Hawk.
St. Joe's season continues with a spring break trip to Clearwater, Fla. to play Michigan State, Jacksonville, South Florida, Penn State, Maine, and North Carolina State for the South Florida Under Armour Invitational. They open Atlantic 10 play on March 20 when they face St. Bonaventure.
