Saint Joseph's students will be out in the cold as Drexel University hosts a debate between the Democratic Presidential candidates on Oct. 30 that will be limited to Drexel University students and faculty.
The debate will include high profile candidates Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, and former Senator John Edwards.
Tickets for the live debate are to be selected in a random lottery for Drexel students and faculty. However, the debate will be broadcast live on MSNBC and streamed on politics.msnbc.com, NBC News 2 Go and Drexel's Web site, www.drexel.edu, thus allowing Saint Joseph's students the ability to watch the debate. For Spanish speakers, it will be re-broadcasted on Telemundo.
There has not been a presidential candidate debate in Pennsylvania since 1976 when President Gerald Ford debated Democratic candidate Jimmy Carter in Philadelphia's Walnut Street Theater.
Reactions from Saint Joseph's students and faculty have been mixed with apprehension and boredom towards the traditional debate process, but with no end to opinions and aspirations for a number of the democratic candidates.
"I haven't paid too much attention yet," said Kevin McNamara, '08. "A lot of it so far has been a 'he said, she said' kind of thing. I wish they wouldn't talk about what they will do, but rather actually have a debate about the pressing issues and how they come about."
McNamara mentioned that his current favorite is former Senator John Edwards.
"I like him better then Hillary and I think Hillary would lose the general election. I know I'd be ready for a Madam President, but I don't think the rest of the country is ready," said McNamara.
Some are looking toward Obama, with his youthful charisma.
"He's an everyman who you could drink a beer with, unlike Bush, who looks like he's had too much to drink," said Matthew McCormick, '08.
There seems to be a lot of mixed emotions around candidate Hillary Clinton.
