HOT:

Halloween Attractions: 'Tis the season for all things spooky, creepy, and terrifying! What better way to get ready for Halloween than by visiting some of the area's most frightful attractions? Here are my hot spots for Halloween entertainment:

- Eastern State Penitentiary (www.easternstate.org): Probably Philly's most popular spot, this attraction starts off with a stop at Yard Out where you can plan to encounter crazy inmates while you listen to ghost stories from the prison. This year, a new feature, called Lock Down, drops you in the middle of the cell blocks so you can make your way past the electric fences and pitch black hallways, and escape from the rattling cell doors. Not for the faint of heart, this attraction is No. 1 on the must-see list. Tickets are $20 Sundays through Thursdays, $25 on Fridays and $30 on Saturdays,

- Bates Motel and Haunted Hayride (www.thebatesmotel.com): Ranked in the top five haunted attractions in America, the Bates Motel will not disappoint. Take a trip on the haunted hayride and find yourself surrounded by ghouls and goblins as it takes you through new trails for even more scares. Then make your way into the motel itself for a heart-pumping tour of terror. Check out the haunted corn maze and try not to run screaming as demons and zombies rise up from the dead to find you. Tickets are $12-$15 depending on the attraction. Combo deals and VIP passes (no waiting!) are also available.

- Jason's Woods (www.jasonswoods.com): Celebrating 22 years of horror, this attraction definitely knows a thing or two about spooks and scares. Offering seven different attractions, including a horrifying hayride and a psycho circus, you're in for a few chills down your spine. Pirate's Revenge and Pitch Black are the newest additions this year. Explore a pirate ghost ship using your 3-D glasses and search for the treasure chest, but make sure none of the zombie pirates catch you. Pitch Black puts you in absolute darkness with nothing but the feel of a cold, chain link fence to guide you out. Listen for the vicious barks and hot breath of the creature that's following you as you try to make it out alive. Individual show prices range from $3 to $12. Buy a combo package for $25 and see the very scariest attractions. VIP passes allow you to skip the line and view the five combo package attractions for $40.

NOT:

Halloween Costume Choices: As we all know, Halloween costumes can be hard to choose, especially given the number of options presented to us in stores and online. Here is the biggest mistake in terms of Halloween costume shopping:

- Shorter isn't Better: This one's for you, ladies. Although Halloween encourages the female genre to show as much skin as possible, take a few precautions before heading out to a party. Although that devil costume might seem sexy, having to constantly adjust yourself is not. Also, make sure you try before you buy because most stores don't allow returns, and you could end up with a costume that's three sizes too big or small.
