Matt Nathanson's gig cut short by curfew crew at Fillmore

Matt Nathanson discharged his heartfelt-love-song shotgun on the cramped crowd in the Fillmore at the Theater of Living Arts on Oct. 12. Entering the first half of his "Some Mad Hope," tour Nathanson brought along opening act and Garden State soundtrack alum Cary Brothers, who was also promoting a new album, "Who You Are."

While Brothers' set wasn't devoid of the indie hit, "Blue Eyes," it was full of tracks from his new album. Backed by an electric guitar and a keyboard/bongo player, Brothers' set was driven acoustically by "Jealously," "Who You Are," "Wasted One," and "If You Were Here." He also included the hit, "Ride," from Zach Braff's other film.

The headliner and his touring band took the stage within minutes of the conclusion of Brothers' set. The last time he took the stage at the TLA, Nathanson and his band rattled through multiple songs that were to be on his upcoming album. Two years later, promoting that recently released and highly anticipated album, the band unleashed "Some Mad Hope" tracks such as "Car Crash" and "Wedding Dress" on the rock-thirsty crowd. After rattling fans with his supernova-sound, the foul-mouthed musician reverted to his old acoustic allure parading through old hits "Curve of the Earth," "I Saw," "Princess," and "Pretty the World."

Never abstaining from his love of '80s rock, Nathanson jokingly, but efficiently, played "Jesse's Girl" and "Don't Stop Believing," both of which received ample backing vocals from the sold-out crowd. Nathanson also covered "Laid," a track that he recorded in Philadelphia and which acted as the staple on the "American Wedding" soundtrack.

Nathanson invited Kim, a waitress that served the band afternoon lunch at the World Café Live and who also plays the accordion, to play on the waltzing track, "Then I'll Be Smiling."

Switching back and forth between his electric and acoustic companions, he played other various "Some Mad Hope" tracks, including "Come On Get Higher," "To the Beat of Our Noisy Hearts," "Gone," "Falling Apart," and "Detroit Waves." He also surprised the crowd by amping up formerly acoustic tunes "Lucky Boy" and "Answering Machine."
