This year is a little different, at least in one of those aspects. The Saint Joseph's University women's tennis team prepares for tough matches, most on the road, but will leave the hand warmers at Hawk Hill. As this year's fall schedule begins to wind down, the Hawks must prepare themselves for some of the best competition yet this year, including last weekend when they squared off against the Rams of Fordham.
The Bronx was the setting for a battle between two Atlantic-10 foes. The Hawks traveled up to New York City to face Fordham University this past Saturday. Unfortunately for St. Joe's, winning on the road against an in-conference opponents is an extremely tough task. That held true as the Hawks fell to Fordham 5-2, with very few bright spots. With the only two singles wins coming from Lauren Kuhmerker, '08, and Tristen Reppert, '09, St. Joe's had a lackluster performance as a team. Kuhmerker defeated Fordham's Martina Featherston in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 10-6) and Reppert got the victory in only two sets (6-3, 6-2).
Finally, in doubles work Katy Borden, '11, and Theresa Horning, '08, came together to defeat the pair of Fordham Rams freshmen, Brittany Russell and Kathryn Pando, in the final match of the day.
With a rough outing at Fordham, the Hawks look to rebound this Wednesday. After a short four-match road trip, St. Joe's come home for a tussle with the Towson Tigers. The Tigers come to Philadelphia on top of their game this year. With veteran experience in senior Amanda Scatuorchio and rising young talent in sophomores Evelyn Izaguirre and Cassandra Ng, Towson will try to keep their unblemished record going. At 3-0, the Tigers have yet to meet their match, and this week the Hawks hope to deliver the first loss.
On the complete opposite end of the spectrum are the LaSalle Explorers. The Explorers are still fighting for their first win of the season and if the Hawks have their way, LaSalle will take a ride back down Roosevelt Boulevard still winless.
For the Hawks to overcome their recent string of unfortunate outcomes, they will have to come prepared and ready to play. From top to bottom, Towson has a strong squad; no matter the age or experience, each player has played well in each match to date.
