The National Cancer Institute estimates that 18,660 deaths in the United States will occur from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2007. In 2006, Nick Colleluori, a native of the Holmes section of Ridley Township, lost his fight to this cancer of the blood, at the age of 21.
In his four years at Ridley High School, Colleluori led the Green Raiders to three straight lacrosse state championships in four state semifinals appearances before graduating in 2004. Colleluori was an all-Delco performer in football and lacrosse before migrating to Hempstead, NY to join Hofstra's lacrosse team. HEADstrong, a group founded by his family, friends, and supporters, raises money to support cancer research institutions in the Colleluori name through various events and fundraisers.
Colleluori was known throughout the community for his hard work and upbeat attitude during his 14-month fight with cancer. Colleluori also motivated and inspired others who were also in similar situations. The Web site, headstrong27.com, displays the amount of support that his group has shown in the cancer community since its inception, including events and fundraisers for their cause.
On Saturday, the first annual Nick Collelouri Classic was held at Ridley High School, hosted by HEADstrong. Saint Joseph's joined Hofstra, Bucknell, Cabrini, Haverford, and UMBC for the event. The round robin lacrosse tournament allowed each team to play three scrimmages and help support the cause off of the field as well.
In the morning, St. Joe's faced off against Hofstra to kickoff the tournament. The Hawks played their starters against the tournament's toughest opponent. Coach Pat Cullinan was content with how the Hawks responded to the Hofstra defense, which extended and provided a great deal of pressure on and off of the ball.
"Maintaining possession and our ability to handle and adjust to the pressure were crucial," said Cullinan. "We will see this type of defense early in the spring when we play Delaware. So, this will help us adjust in similar situations."
