Largely lost among the playoff fever engulfing Philadelphia is the opening of the NHL season.
For the hometown Flyers, the season has begun with one win and one loss in the Pacific Northwest against tough competitors Edmonton and Calgary.
The Flyers are coming off a putrid 2006-2007 campaign during which they finished last in the league, a full 11 points behind the next worst team. In the off-season, however, the front office revamped the squad, bringing in top-flight free agents.
Foremost among those acquisitions are Daniel Briere (center) from the Buffalo Sabres, who has tallied four points in his first two games as a Flyer, and Jason Smith (right) from the Edmonton Oilers, who is the newly appointed captain. The other notable new face is Joffrey Lupul, a young, high-scoring winger who was also brought over from Edmonton.
Perhaps the most important facet of this rebuilding process could be provided by Martin Biron, who was acquired from Buffalo during the middle of last season. He looks to provide long-absent stability as an established number one goaltender.
With the new players having been brought in, adding to what already was one of the strongest bases of young talent in the league, the Flyers look primed to contend in a deep and talented Eastern Conference.
The city's first opportunity to see the Flyers in action comes on Oct. 13, when they will host the New York Islanders
