Hello fellow Hawks!

Hopefully you've heard that this weekend our beloved school kicked off its largest development campaign in history-With Faith and Strength to Dare: The Campaign for Saint Joseph's University. What does this mean?

It means that St. Joe's is seeking to raise money to accomplish a number of goals, including everything from an increase in the number of faculty and amount of student aid to the acquisition of Episcopal Academy, renovation of our athletic facilities, and construction of a new Learning Commons. Your Student Senate has been involved in the planning of many of these initiatives, and I assure all of you that you have much to be excited for in the coming years.

All of you can and should get involved as well. This campaign is putting St. Joe's in the spotlight and transforming our University in the public eye like never before, potentially having huge benefits for the future of Hawk Hill.

Even if you will not experience first-hand the rewards that this initiative will reap (like many of our upperclassmen), your future prestige and success will correspond positively with changes to our campus.

"Alumni" may seem like a dreaded term, signifying the end of your time as a college student and the onslaught of the real world. It should not be that way, however. We are all Hawks, not for a mere four years, but for life.

During our time as students, we are simply stewards of an educational and life experience, an experience that we can have a positive and significant impact once we spread our wings in the real world and embrace the opportunities that our Jesuit education has given to us, all the while remaining involved in the activity and development of the University.

Monetary donation is only one form of giving; by staying in touch with St. Joe's and spreading the good word of its benefits later in life, you can give back to a community that has given much. Get involved with the Alumni Office, network with St. Joe's alums, and look forward to your long future as a Hawk.

I also would like to speak about the recent articles regarding freshmen drinking and partying. As a student leader, like many of you, I take the duty I have seriously as a role model to students who are new to our community.

Although I also believe strongly in a balance between work and play, situations that lend themselves to unsafe behavior and put our friends at personal risk should not be "OK," even if they are perceived to be part of the norm.

Partying and underage drinking are activities that are probably not going to go out of style anytime soon, but for everyone's sake, let's all be mindful of looking out for one another and keeping everyone safe.

Remember, Senate meetings are held every Monday evening at 5:30 in the President's Lounge, and are open to all students. I hope to see you there!

Your Student Body President,

Mike McDonald
