The Saint Joseph's men's and women's cross country teams continued their seasons this past weekend when they traveled to Penn State for the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational.
For the third time out of three this season, they put up solid efforts; the men and women both finished third overall out of 11 and 10 teams, respectively.
The men's team was third-best at the meets, finishing with a total of 86 points that was bested only by first-place Columbia (26) and second-place Penn State (35).
Kyle Murray, '09, led the way for the Hawks by finishing in seventh place out of 130 runners, landing in a time of 27:02 on the 5.2-mile golf course. He has emerged as the Hawks' number one runner over the last two meets and also brought in St. Joe's at the Ram Invitational, in which he finished second overall.
Then once again, Murray, for the second straight meet, was followed by a pack of supporters. The last four scorers finished between 16th and 29th, completing the spread between the first and fifth runners to 1:35 in the process.
Jonathan Sclafani, '10, was the second Hawk to fly in, completing the race in 27:45 for 16th place overall. In doing so, he held a big part in helping the team do what it wanted in the race.
"Third is what we thought we could get," said Sclafani. "So we just tried to go out there, run a hard race, and see what happened. We really wanted to get a hard race in before the [Atlantic 10 Championship Race]."
Brian Guterl, '11, followed in 20th place (27:54), Jim Jennings, '10, in 23rd (28:00), and Ryan Fenimore, '11, in 29th (28:37) to complete the scoring for Saint Joseph's.
Brendan Kearney, '09, and Jesse Brooks, '11, rounded out the top seven for the Hawks. Kearney flew through in a time of 29:07 for 39th place, and Brooks cashed in with a 43rd-place performance in a time of 29:10.
This solid start to the cross country season is nice for the Hawks, but more importantly, they know what to improve on as the season unfolds.
