Although the women's soccer team has struggled mightily through the first 10 games this season, it appears the Hawks have found someone to lead them through the next four years. Carly Salter, '11, figures to be a large part of the offensive attack at Saint Joseph's for seasons to come.

As a team, the Hawks have managed a meager five goals during their 2-8 start. Salter, however, has shown much promise in leading the offensive charge. The freshman leads the team in scoring (two goals, one assist), shots (14), and shots on goal (nine).

"We brought Carly into our program to make an immediate impact in our midfield," said head coach Jess Reynolds. "We recruited her because of her leadership ability. She has a strong heart and we saw that during the recruiting process and we recruited her to be a future leader of this team."

Salter got her first career goal out of the way in a hurry, scoring in a season-opening 1-0 win against Drexel at Finnesey Field.

"Scoring my first collegiate goal was absolutely amazing," she said. "I never felt better. When the shot went in, I got the chills. I was so excited and I got a huge burst of energy. It was one of the best feelings I ever got scoring a goal. Scoring the first goal that was a game winner as a freshman was awesome, especially with all the fans and being under the lights too."

All things considered, Salter has adjusted quickly to college life and Division I soccer.

"The college adjustment was difficult at first, managing soccer and school," she said. "Sometimes rushing around to practice and class and vice versa gets frustrating but it has gotten easier as the weeks have passed. It was not really difficult to adjust to the soccer part because I have been playing soccer at a high level for all my life."

Salter's ability to adjust on the field was evident immediately, according to Reynolds.

"She has stepped up well in the forward position," she said. "When Amanda Morrell tore her ACL this summer, we knew we would be having a hole in the forward position. We knew Carly had played there in the past."
