Hello fellow Hawks!
October is upon us - we are finally well into the school year. As autumn comes and as midterms approach, it is important not to get into a rut and to keep challenging yourselves in your social and intellectual lives. Professors are, of course, just revving up when it comes to essays and tests, but by now you should know enough about your routine to be able to handle it. Don't forget to have a little fun every now and then also.
Something that is coming up that I want to make sure everyone is aware of is St. Joe's second annual Community Day.
This event was started last year as a collaborative effort by a diverse group of student organizations to get Saint Joseph's University students out in our local community doing positive things. This day of service was followed up with a celebration of the good work we had done and the values that we all shared as students in this community.
This year, on Saturday, Oct. 27, we will be once again spreading out across the city of Philadelphia with the common goal of working together as Hawks to do good for our neighbors in the surrounding communities. A committee of students, including organizations such as your Student Senate, the Student Union Board, the Black Student Union, and Greek organizations, has been planning an event that will include more students, faculty, and staff, and will go to more places across the city in a gesture of goodwill to our neighbors. There will be a sendoff in the morning and a celebration upon everyone's return.
I hope all of you consider participating in this new St. Joe's tradition! This event exemplifies what it means to be a Hawk, namely being men and women with and for others and celebrating our own diversity and capability as a group of young people. It is only one afternoon out of the year; there will be free food and T-shirts, and you might make a new friend or two. Check out http://www.sju.edu/uss/communityday.htm for more information on how to get involved!
As always, I would like to remind you that Senate meetings are now at a new time and place so as to be more accessible to all of you students. Come stop by each Monday evening at 5:30 in the President's Lounge in Campion to see your student government in action and to speak your mind about the issues that are concerning you. We had a very successful "Senate Supper" last week in hopes of making sure all of you are getting what you want out of your meal plan-just one example of our efforts to reach out and make your St. Joe's experience the best it can!
If you have any questions about Community Day, food, or anything else about this school, please feel free to get in touch with me at mm302492@sju.edu, by calling (610) 660-1075, or by stopping by the Senate Office in Campion 227B. We are always glad to hear what you have to say.
