To the editor:
Recently, in a letter to The Hawk, a disgruntled parent warned St. Joe's students not to live in Pennbrook Apartments. This parent, whose daughter apparently lived in Pennbrook last year, listed many complaints about the living conditions, many of which we, as current residents, find to be unfounded.
In over a year of residing in Pennbrook, we have never encountered roaches or any pests. In fact, management hires an exterminator to make monthly checks of each apartment in the building. We have never had any problems with leaky walls or toilets either.
We can attest to the fact that the elevators are frequently out of service, but that hardly seems like a reason not to live in a building. Pennbrook is a fairly small building, and a normal college student should be able to handle walking a maximum of four stories a few times a day. We also agree that there is little to no parking available in front of the building, but this is the city of Philadelphia, and there is no parking anywhere, even on campus.
Ownership of the building recently changed hands and perhaps the new owners are still trying to work out the monetary issues. The trouble this parent had in getting the security deposit back is an alarming one, but one we hope we will not have to deal with when we move out. With any luck, this issue will be resolved in the near future. If not, we thank the parent for her warning on that matter.
On the whole, our past year living in Pennbrook Apartments has been quite enjoyable. We have found the conditions of our apartment, upon being spruced up with color and light, to be comparable to those found in on-campus housing, even with regards to capaciousness. The rent is relatively low and includes utilities, making it a good bargain for cash-strapped college students. Pennbrook is conveniently located across the street from a Saint Joseph's shuttle stop and the Overbrook train station. It is even closer to campus than the on-campus dorm Lancaster Court.
We find Pennbrook Apartments to be a suitable, if not downright pleasant, dwelling for any St. Joe's student seeking to live off campus. We are not accusing this parent of lying or embellishing, but our experience in Pennbrook Apartments has been markedly different from hers. Don't let the negative outlook of one unhappy parent dissuade you from considering Pennbrook as an option.

Unfortunately I think this letter to the editor was the product of naive college students who don't know better.
The Pennbrook is a decrepit, dangerous place to live. (Continued…)
