Hello Fellow Hawks!

Let me first express my sincerest wishes that everyone's school year is off to a great start! It has been a busy start to the semester across the University, and your Student Senate has been working hard to keep up with the St. Joe's buzz.

To all the freshmen-I hope your first month on Hawk Hill has been a chance for you to get acclimated to life as a college student and as a Hawk. For those of you who don't know me, I'm your student body president, and it is my responsibility to be the chief representative of your opinions and concerns to the university administration. I sit on a variety of University committees and meet with university officials, as well as oversee the University Student Senate (USS), your student government organization. Through all of these things, I (along with the rest of the USS) try my best to ensure your voice is heard and things get done at our school that make your lives as students healthier, safer, more engaging, more fun, and an all-around better experience. In short, if you need anything or have any complaints, we are the ones to get in touch with.

As for everyone else, you should all be aware of a major change this semester. We have moved our Senate meetings to the President's Lounge in Campion, making them more accessible to all of you. They are held every Monday evening from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and are open to all students. Please feel free to come in, listen to St. Joe's version of democracy in action, and speak your mind about what's happening around campus.

A major initiative that we are undertaking is an investigation into how the money you give as part of the student activity fee is collected, distributed, and spent. There will be an open meeting this Friday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. in Sunroom II during which Lou Gretta, your student vice president for financial affairs, and Cary Anderson, Ph. D., the University's new vice president for student life, will be leading a conversation about how the fee is currently run and some ideas for potential changes in the future. All students are invited, especially those involved with student organizations - this is your money and we would like to hear your opinions on how it should be utilized.

Big things are coming, as St. Joe's approaches the acquisition of Maguire Campus and the kickoff of the capital campaign. Things on Hawk Hill will be moving and shaking, and we are doing our best to keep you informed and involved. Check out our new and improved website, http://www.sju.edu/uss, for the latest information on what's happening at our University, the members of your Senate, and our current initiatives. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with me, or stop by my office in Campion 227B. Be safe, and don't work too hard-it's not good for you.

Your Student Body President,

Michael McDonald
