The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team picked up their second win of the season in dominant fashion this weekend, dominating Manhattan College on Sept. 15 to the tune of a 7-0 victory.
They followed that up with a narrow defeat, 4-3, at the hands of arch-rival Villanova on Sept. 17. These two results move the Lady Hawks' record to 2-5 on the year.
The Hawks easily put forth their most impressive performance of the year against Manhattan, sweeping all of the matches on the day.
The key to the Hawks' effort impressive performances by two breakout stars of last season, Stephania Velazquez, '08, and Jennifer Kedzierski, '10, who are entering their second season on Hawk Hill.
Velazquez kicked off the match by defeating Lindsey Keeler 6-2, 6-3 in first singles. Her performance picked up from where she left off last season, when she went 11-11 in first singles, garnering All-Atlantic-10 honors.
Kedzierski also continued her record-setting form of last year, coasting to a 6-1, 6-2 win in second singles. Occupying that same role last year, she compiled a 16-3 record, which set several school records.
The two also paired up for first doubles, claiming an 8-2 victory. Their performance comes as no surprise, as they accumulated 10 wins against only two defeats while playing together last season.
While Velazquez and Kedzierski played a large role in the defeat of the Jaspers, they were by no means alone. Other singles wins were posted by Gina DiGiacomo, '09, in third, Maggie Mullaney, '11, in fourth, Lauren Kuhmerker, '08, in fifth, and Katy Borden, '11 in sixth. With the exception of Borden's triumph by forfeit, DiGiacomo, Mullaney, and Kuhmerker won, dropping only six total games (three, two, and one, respectively).
The Hawks' dominance continued in doubles competition. The pairing of DiGiacomo and Mullaney took the win in second doubles. Arguably the most complete performance of the afternoon was put in by the third doubles team of Kuhmerker and Theresa Hornung, '08, who swept the set 8-0.
