One of the best-kept secrets on Hawk Hill is the great success of many of Saint Joseph's club and intramural teams. Boasting nearly 20 sports that compete at the club level, this recreation department provides athletic opportunities for the students of St. Joe's who lack the time or ability to participate in sports on the varsity level.

Each sports season, the Hawk club teams head out for interscholastic competitions against teams anywhere from local to national levels.

This fall's slate of club teams is not yet out in full force, as many have not yet started their schedules. Two that have just begun are the men's club rugby team and the women's club field hockey team.

Men's rugby is fresh off its first match of the season, a hard-fought 17-0 defeat against Division I Millersville University in a preseason friendly. The shutout, the first suffered by the team since 2004, was a scoreless draw until the half, and was blown open in the game's last five minutes when the Marauders quickly scored 12 points.

The captains of this year's squad are Nick Pisacano, '08, and Jason Coppola, '08, who will be leading a veteran squad through a long season in both the fall and spring. Other standouts include center Joe Swanick, '08, and newcomer Chris Watts, '09.

Coming up for the Hawks is a rivalry game against Villanova on Sept. 22 at Memorial Hall. The bitter rivalry between the teams continues after Saint Josephs thrashed Villanova last spring by a 50-0 margin.

Also in action over the weekend was the field hockey club. They too struggled in their opener, falling 3-0 to Villanova. With limited practice prior to the match, the Hawks put forth a strong effort against a more experienced Wildcat squad. Despite the score line, goalie Danielle Luchessi, '11, was named the game's most valuable player in her first match.

As the season progresses, the club field hockey team look to blend veteran leadership and youthful contributions in order to succeed. Led by captains Amy Cengeri, '08, and Katie Tente, '08, the Hawks face a difficult schedule in the weeks ahead. Among the upcoming challenges the field hockey club face are games against the University of Pennsylvania, Loyola (Md.), Towson, Temple, Penn State, and the University of Delaware.
