The Student Union Board has completely revamped SJU 'til 2. It is now called SUB Late Night, and will offer trips to Manayunk and King of Prussia on Fridays, while on Saturdays a designated event will take place that will vary from weekend to weekend.
The Saturday programs will not last "til'2" but whenever the event itself concludes, and it is intended to start from anywhere between 7 to 11 p.m. Another major change is that instead of every weekend, movies will only run every third weekend.
The decision to change SJU 'til 2 was decided upon mutually by the staff of SJU 'til 2 and SUB, as well as the student body. The change initiated over the course of spring semester of 2007 with various staff members. According to Beth Hagovsky, Ed.D., Director of Student Leadership and Activities, "We asked ourselves, 'Is this the best way to spend student dollars?'"
SUB has shifted the focus of the St. Joe's weekend entertainment program to improving the quality of events instead of increasing quantity. Joseph Jennings, SUB President, said that last year, "There were five things going on at once, the money was spread out to finance all of the programs…but now that it's changed we can bring better programs."
The rationale for the change is to increase the quality of the program by offering one or two events. According to Hagovsky, the goal of SUB is to have the "greatest diversity of programs" to satisfy the various interests of the student body.
This past weekend marked the first step in that direction with the performance of the hip-hop group "Code Red." Despite having only a few stragglers as an audience, the group went on with the show and lightheartedly exclaimed: "We've traveled around the world and played for audiences of 6,000; it doesn't matter if it's for six or 6,000, we're still gonna play!"
The songs they played ranged from reggae to rap, with lyrics about the war in Iraq and having a good time. The students that did attend clapped along to the music. Refreshments were served after the event.
With the major revamping, SUB Late Night is still a work in progress despite its promising schedule of events. While the forms of publicizing the events are being changed, students should keep an eye out for postings in Campion and on all major bulletins for what will happen next weekend.
