The type of attitude displayed by Saint Joseph's men's soccer team last week is what every player and team need to succeed in any sport.

Colin Baker, '11, summed it up best: "If we play like that, we can beat anyone." His comments came in response to the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team's stellar performance last week.

St. Joe's 3-2 victory over Coastal Carolina was highlighted by Baker's hat trick, but not to be forgotten was the solid play of the entire team throughout the game.

The Hawks look to take that winning mentality and carry it into this week's two matches. St. Joe's battles Villanova on Wednesday, a rivalry that needs no explanation, followed by Rider University on Friday.

Villanova will host the Hawks, and there is only one given for this match: Each team will come ready to play. Villanova is fresh off a stunning 1-0 victory against the top ranked team in the country, Duke. They will try to continue that success against the Hawks while trying to notch their fourth win of the young season.

St. Joe's is a team looking for their second win of the year and revenge against the Wildcats. In their last meeting, 'Nova stole a goal in the waning minutes of overtime to secure a 2-1 win over St. Joe's at Finnesey Field. While every defeat hurts, this year's squad is especially sore from the loss to their hated rival. The Hawks will be looking to avenge the loss with a victory of their own on the enemy's turf and snap 'Nova's three game winnig streak.

In the later game his week, the Hawks play host to Rider on Finnesey Field. The Broncs come in slumping, having lost their last three. With Rider struggling at this point in the season, St. Joe's will try to take advantage and come away with a win before a two- game road trip next week.

The Hawks soccer team has several reasons to be hopeful about their matches this week and for the entire season.

"We're a tight group, we hang out off the field and that helps our chemistry on the field," said Baker. The importance of how a team knows one another and works together is vital to success. In soccer, there are eleven men on the field that must act as a cohesive unit to achieve the ultimate goal of victory.

Another positive aspect for the Hawks this season is a strong contingent of upperclassmen, especially seniors. Leadership from these veterans is an attribute that can take a team a long way. The team is spearheaded by the presence of this senior leadership that simultaneously allows the younger players to develop and grow beneath them.

Saint Joseph's men's soccer team is feeling good and playing well, and hopefully can convert those feelings into wins this week. With two tough matches scheduled, the Hawks can't afford to slouch on either opponent at any time. With veteran leadership and team chemistry, St. Joe's will prove to be a formidable match against whomever they square off against, especially 'Nova.
