The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team returned to the winning side of the ledger on Friday, Aug. 7, recording a 1-0 victory over Robert Morris University at Finnesey Field. The game's lone score was tallied by Lauren Sawyer, '11, her first career goal as a member of the Hawks.
The victory moved the Hawks to 2-1 on the year. Coming off a brutal 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Delaware on Sept. 2, St. Joes rebounded well, showing great character and resiliency.
St. Joe's put forth an excellent effort in all phases of the game, with stifling defense and control of the midfield play. The field play was bolstered by a strong outing in goal by Megan Bastianelli, '10, who recorded six saves.
Sawyer's score came in the 17th minute, when she took an expertly weighted pass from defender Sarah O'Malley, '11, down the right wing.
She was able to maneuver past her defender and poke the shot home ahead of the on rushing keeper Jessica Onufer.
Unfortunately for Sawyer, the play resulted in a collision between Sawyer and Onufer, necessitating her substitution from the game.
With the one-goal lead in hand, the Hawks focused on solidifying the defensive backline. While the attack was kept at bay for most of the opening 45 minutes, Robert Morris pushed further forward in the second half, creating several opportunities on goal.
The closest the Colonials came to breaching the Saint Joseph's defense came in the 54th minute, when Kathleen Caggiano stormed down the left wing.
Her shot called into action Bastianelli, who barely got a piece of the ball, tipping it off the crossbar and allowing her defense to clear the rebound.
In addition to Bastianelli's hard work, the spells of heavy pressure put on by the Colonials were countered by a dominant performance out of the central defense pairing of O'Malley and Kelly Galen, '08.
In attack, the Hawks recorded eight shots on the evening. The only Hawk that tallied multiple shots was Carly Salter, '11, who fired two shots at Onufer.
