The St. Joe's women's lacrosse team fell to 1-1 Sunday as they dropped their home opener on Finnesey Field against Philadelphia rival Drexel.
The Dragons dominated the game from the start, jumping out to a 9-0 lead before the Hawks were able to tally their first goal, scored on a shot from Kristina Jaggers, '07, with less than 12 minutes remaining in the second half.
Abby Renninger, '08 and Christina Colangelo, '08, found the back of the net immediately after Jaggers, cutting the deficit to 6 goals, but the Hawks failed to narrow the gap any further, allowing two more Drexel goals to the Hawks one.
Four goals and an assist from Jessica Bill, Drexel's leading scorer on the afternoon, proved to be too much for the Hawks defense, despite a strong nine-save effort from goalie Suzy Herlihy, '09.
Six different players scored for Drexel, as they improved to 4-1 to start the season. Behind Bill's scoring and seven saves from goalie Lauren LaBella, the Dragons were able to pull away from a late, second-half surge from St. Joe's to defeat their out-of-conference opponent.
Only a road game at nearby Villanova and trip to Lehigh come between the Hawks and their next chance to win on their home field, with an upcoming five-game home streak between March 23 and April 6, ending with an important home match up with the highly touted Richmond Spiders.
The Hawks will need to spread out their scoring, since they have relied heavily thus far on Colangelo, and will try to minimize shots on goalie Herlihy.
Fortunately for the Hawks, their most recent loss will not affect their Atlantic 10 standings, as they hope to advance to the post season once again this year.
