The squad gathered valuable early-season experience on the trip, which will help them in their ride through Atlantic 10 play.
The Hawks played a competitive slate of games, coming up 2-10 in their effort against a handful of teams, including Michigan State, Lehigh, Harvard, Robert Morris, Quinnipiac, and Boston University. However, it was evident that one Hawk was able to pick up right where she left off last season.
Lauren Cognigni, a native of Levittown, Pa., continued to add to her list of accolades on the softball diamond. As a junior pitcher, Cognigni is now a few games past the halfway point of her stay on Hawk Hill.
Looking at her list of accomplishments, it is hard to believe that she is only at this stage of her Saint Joseph's career.
Last Monday, Cognigni threw a no-hitter as the Hawks prevailed 7-0 versus the Robert Morris Colonials.
Cognigni registered seven strikeouts on the mound during the contest.
Before arriving at Saint Joseph's, Cognigni had already won her fair share of awards while playing for Pennsbury High School in Bucks County.
Cognigni was a part of four consecutive district softball championship teams as well as a state championship team at Pennsbury.
In her final season, Cognigni took home Philadelphia Inquirer and Courier Times Player of the Year awards. Evidently, Cognigni has made a smooth adjustment to the quicker collegiate game.
Earlier in her St. Joe's career, Cognigni also pitched a perfect game. There are some similarities between her two milestone outings for the Hawks.
Ironically, both of Cognigni's stellar games have come while pitching near the beach.
During her freshman season, Cognigni stifled the Lafayette College Leopards, striking out six of them in Georgetown, on the Delaware shore, for her perfect game.
It was only Cognigni's sixth career start for the Hawks. The perfect game occurred so early in her career that she had not yet suited up for a collegiate game in Pennsylvania.
Both games occurred early in the season during the month of March, demonstrating the amount of off-season preparation and time she has committed to improving her game.
