On Tuesday, Feb. 27, the University Student Senate passed a resolution resulting in the creation of a Senate-sponsored Student Art Competition.
The goal of the Student Art Resolution is to establish a student competition in order to celebrate student intellectual achievement. It is also designed to help beautify campus common areas with permanent contributions of student artwork.
Student Body President Michael McDonald, '08, described the lasting benefit of such a competition.
"The art competition would allow us to display student art in a more public and lasting way," McDonald said.
The details are still in their preliminary stages, but the contest would be open to all Saint Joseph's University students. Students would offer a design concept or a proposal for what they want to do, and the Senate would vote on the one that they feel is the best.
The University Student Senate would then commission the selected student to produce that art. The Senate would provide funding for the production of the artwork and a potentially general prize to be awarded to the student upon completion of the work.
McDonald said, "Ideally, I would want to see a reasonable amount spent actually producing the work of art. We would provide funds for supplying paints, a canvas, clay, and other materials. I would like to see an additional prize, not too extensive, maybe five hundred dollars. It's all up to the Student Senate, and that's still being discussed."
The work of art would be St. Joe's themed. However, the theme would still remain broad enough to allow for artistic creativity. The example that McDonald supplied was the Jesuit ideal of the Magis.
McDonald hopes that the program will take off successfully and recur on an annual basis.
"I think it's a great idea, and I hope that students get excited for it and that it's something that we can continue for a number of years," he said.
The resolution is still undergoing amendments, and struggled to pass through the Student Senate at all.
