Main St. Manayunk brews up dinner and drinks

Since the first batch of beer was tapped on Oct. 17, 1996, Manayunk Brewery has been a staple in Main Street dining.
From the outside, Manayunk Brewery does not look all that impressive. The tall, reddish-brown brick building would probably never be noticed if it weren't for the neon green archway over the driveway which spells out the restaurant's name. On the inside though, the Brewery comes to life.
The first thing you notice upon entering is a large antique scale left over from back when the building was used as a textile mill. This scale was used to weigh the wool that entered. The main floor of Manayunk Brewery is made of several large, open, brick-walled rooms, lined with bars and filled with white clothed tables. A jazzy feel pervades the restaurant, induced by the colorful paintings and murals of men playing trumpets and saxophones. This jazz vibe is furthered by the live music and entertainment offered on the weekends.
What really sets Manayunk Brewery apart from other restaurants on Main Street is its reputation. It is most notable for its award-winning beers, which, as the name of the restaurant would suggest, are brewed right on the premises.
The Brewery offers a selection of eight different beers at a time, four mainstays and four seasonals, prepared by brewmaster Chris Firey, formerly of Victory Brewing Company in Downingtown, PA. Firey has been with Manayunk Brewery for the past three years, improving upon the old recipes and adding his own.
As most beer drinkers know, certain beers complement certain dinners better than others. The servers at Manayunk Brewery do an excellent job of pointing out which beer goes best with which meal. The Manayunk Lager complements most dishes.
This Lager is a German Oktober Festbier, a balanced, Vienna-style beer with extra malt. It is dark orange in color and has a very smooth taste.
One beer that is quite different than the other beers offered is the Schuylkill Punch, a Belgian Red ruby colored ale. This raspberry-flavored ale is fermented with 500 pounds of real black berries and raspberries. It has a strong berry aroma and a sweet, bubbly taste.
