The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team will head west to Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio to play the Rhode Island Rams in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship.
The team leaves Hawk Hill 16-12 in the regular season and 9-6 in the A-10, ranking fifth in the conference. Their last win was against A-10 team Duquesne, 75-65, connecting on 10 of 22 three-point field goals.
With back-to-back road trips, the players will need to hit the reserves. The game against Duquesne was not the best Hawk women's basketball. Not even close.
Offensively, the Hawks started off strong, shooting 53 percent in field goals but wavered in the second half, only shooting 31 percent. Saint Joseph's had many looks in the second half (29) but fell into a shooting slump, enabling Duquesne to catch up.
There is no room for slumping in the A-10 championship. If the Hawks want to advance to the second round in which they would play Charlotte, point guard Whitney Ffrench, '07, needs to tally more than 11 points. Ffrench knows she can drive successfully to the basket and usually make the basket or draw a foul.
Erica Pollock, '07, finished the night against the Dukes with only four points. Time is running out for Pollock as she plays her last tourney. Pollock needs to grab as many offensive rebounds as possible to lift the Hawks past Rhode Island.
Another starter that can really shine in the tourney is guard Jen Oyler, '09. Oyler, still continuing to start, is averaging half of her career high of 16 points, which she achieved in January against Fordham. Against Duquesne, Oyler only posted five points and no offensive or defensive rebounds. Oyler needs to find her spark again on the three-point line and use her height to her advantage at the post.
In the beginning of the season, Head Coach Cindy Griffin said she has confidence in her bench to the speed and scoring of the game consistent for four to five minute clips. Players like guard Timisha Gomez, '08, point guard Mary Kate McDade, '09, Brittany Ford, '10, and Amy Gillespie, '10, are talented bench players that can find their mark in the league by forcing turnovers, fast-breaking, and keeping their opponent 10 under their average scoring bracket.
