Most of the Saint Joseph's men's and women's track athletes finished their indoor seasons this past weekend when they competed in the NYU Fastrack "Last Chance" Invitational, their final opportunity to qualify for the IC4A Championships this coming weekend.

There was no team scoring, but many Hawks ended the season flying high.

With the competition possessing a few great teams, as well as many unattached individuals, St. Joe's found ways to create a presence.

Stephen Young, '09, headlined the men's events. The talented mid-distance runner from Edgewater Park, N.J. qualified for the IC4A meet in the 1000 meters by finishing in 2:29.79.

Young's third-place race also tied him for the highest finisher on the Hawks' men's squad.

"We really wanted to get some other guys to qualify for IC4A's," said senior leader Teddy Meyers, '07. "And we did that."

Meyers added to the Hawks' qualifiers list with his seventh-place performance in the mile.

The Bethel Park High School grad took off at the start and then flew to the finish in 4:13.69, extending his season in that race.

The men's 4x800m relay team of Jonathan Sclafani, '10, Mike Tatara, '07, Joe Witiw, '07, and Brian Doherty, '10, also received bronze status. The foursome combined to run an 8:06.37, giving the crimson and gray another stellar effort in their last race of the season.

Bobby Staten, '08, having already qualified for this weekend's event, contributed to the Hawks' efforts by finishing fifth in the 200-meter race. His time of 22.23 seconds was a personal best.

Tatara and Witiw also proved their value in the 500 meters. They finished fifth and eighth, respectively, with Tatara running a 1:05.84 and Witiw cranking out a 1:06.12.

"We really had some nice all-around performances," said Meyers. "The meet was a good closer for many of the guys, and it was a nice way for the guys who are competing next week to stay sharp."

The Hawks' qualifiers will look to stay sharp for the rest of the week before entering this weekend's IC4A (Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes in America) meet, which will be held in Boston, MA.
