The President's Desk: Come together: We all eat the same chicken wraps

Michael McDonald '08

Issue date: 2/28/07 Section: Features
Going along with my recent affection for my own vision statement, I would like to take a look at yet another one of the eight initiatives outlined in the plan for this upcoming year. Initiative seven states that we, your student government, shall strive to "ensure that Saint Joseph's University remains a place where students love to learn and to live." This is a broad statement, to be sure, but goes well with our constant battles for you in areas like Dining Services, Public Safety and Security, and Residence Life.

Part of this initiative is especially pertinent considering some recent incidents that have been occurring around campus. Dr. Lelii, Vice President of Student Life, and Dr. Wachterhauser, University Provost, wrote a poignant letter to the editor in last week's Hawk, and it is something that I think needed to be addressed.

For those of you who may have breezed by it, I encourage you to dig out your copy of the paper and take a look.

In summation, the letter, citing a specific malicious incident targeting an individual who is a student as our University, focused on the responsibility we have as American citizens, college students, and more specifically pupils of the Jesuit values and ideals to exercise free speech, but to do so respectfully and with civility.

Initiative seven should more precisely state that we, as a Student Senate, should ensure that this remains a place where all students love to learn and to live. We are all people, and as such we all share a certain amount of rights and due respect. Also, as members of this community, there is a vital thread that runs through all of our experiences, and that is that we are Saint Joseph's students; that we are Hawks.

We all trudge through the same GER, we all eat the same delicious chicken wraps, we all spend years getting lost in Barbelin Hall - these are things, however small, that identify us, and in essence, should fill us with pride with our community and the people in it.
