There's a new trend on campus and it's sure to leave your style smokin' hot. The days of rollers before bed are far behind us, and the little sister to the once-sophisticated curling iron has now grown up and become a sleek and sophisticated tool: the flat iron.

During the '70s, straightening hair was as crucial to the daily routine as brushing teeth. Since hair technology was not at its prime, women often resorted to drastic measures. Judy Kelly, a woman now in her late 50s, remembers the pains she went through in order to get the straightest "do" out there.

"I remember my mother putting a pillowcase across the kitchen counter and having me lay my hair across it," said Kelly. "Then she would fold over the pillow case and actually run a clothing iron back and forth over my hair. Talk about the split ends I got from that," said Kelly.

Nowadays, there are easier ways to achieve that smooth look without doing permanent damage to your hair - or your kitchen. Companies such as ConairPro, Hot Tools, and CHI all make flat ironing tools for those in dire need of straight hair.

Some women believe that any iron will do while others swear by one or another. Clare Rachko, '09, uses the Hot Tools Ceramic Flat Iron, which costs about $40.

"My hair isn't curly or anything-just frizzy. And it never dries straight," Rachko said. "It takes me about 10 minutes to finish my hair. I know there are better straighteners out there, but I'm not willing to spend a few hundred bucks. My Hot Tools does the job."

For those who have extremely long, curly, or frizzy hair, sometimes the cheaper irons, such as the Hot Tools Professional Flat Iron ($15) and the ConairPro Plimatic Trix Stix Straightening and Curling Iron, which go for $15 and $13 respectively, just don't cut it. Instead, some wavy-haired women are willing to sacrifice as much as $200 to achieve straight hair.

CHI brand hair accessories are rumored to be at the top of the flat iron food chain. The company's Web states that its product is "…the best flat iron on the market" and "the number one selling flat iron in the professional beauty industry. The sleek, slim and simple design of the CHI Flat Iron makes it the most easy and convenient to use."
