In their second game of the season, the St. Joe's men's lacrosse team fell to the ninth ranked Navy Midshipmen, 10-3, starting off the season 0-2 with consecutive road losses to top 25 opponents.
The Mids opened their season at Navy - Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis with a scare, as the unranked Hawks threatened throughout much of the first half.
Navy midfielder Basil Daratsos struck quickly, barely a minute into the first quarter, but the teams traded unsuccessful possessions for another nine minutes before St. Joe's Mike O'Neill, '07, evened the score just before the 10 minute mark.
Attackman Alex Lopes, '09, gave the Hawks their first and only lead with 8:12 remaining in the second quarter, but Navy Head Coach Richie Meade's team quickly rallied to regain control with a flurry of three consecutive goals.
Steve O'Brien, '08, who led the Hawks with two first half assists, fed Peter Slowik, '10, to narrow the gap at 4-3, but the Hawks would come no closer to the talented Midshipmen as they shook away their off-season rust.
Junior Nick Mirabito led the Mids the rest of the way, recording a hat trick to help Navy pull away with six second-half goals.
Matt Guido and Ian Dingman, an early All - American favorite, added two goals piece, and the Hawks' steady defense was overwhelmed by the unrelenting Mids.
After a 20 save performance last week against Delaware, goalie Erik Hotaling, '09, was impressive once again, stifling the Navy offense with 12 saves from 47 shots, and said that despite some ugly statistics, the team defense is improving from the grueling non - conference games that began the season.
"Our first two opponents were obviously really good, but when we get to conference play our defense should be phenomenal," said Hotaling.
Hotaling, an All - MAAC performer as a freshman, spent extra time with the Hawks' new goalie coach to help solidify the young defensive core in the starting lineup, and sees improvement in the team's play, despite two lopsided losses.
