The Saint Joseph's Baseball team headed down to Norfolk, Virginia for a three game series against the Norfolk State Spartans.

The Spartans enter the series with an 0-2 record. Although the weather was less than cooperative, the Hawks battled the Spartans each game.

The series opened up with a game on Friday afternoon. Chris Prescott took the mound, and pitched two scoreless innings. Donald Werner,'08, came in to pitch for Prescott in the third inning.

The game was scoreless for four innings, but the season opener looked promising for the Hawks because they took an early lead in the fourth inning.

The Hawks were up 1-0 because Chris Cashman,'08, hit a single to drive in Jeremy Jakubowski,'08, from second.

Unfortunately Norfolk State tied up the game in the bottom of the inning by a sacrifice fly from third baseman Anselamo Cantu.

Each squad posted a few hits, but the game continued into the later innings again without any runs.

Werner pitched a great game, but was taken out in the eighth inning so that Jeff Williams,'09, could close it out. Williams was in a tight spot because he walked the first and second batters.

At the bottom of the eighth inning the scoreboard read Norfollk State 3, Saint Joseph's 1. The game would end this way, leaving Saint Joseph's with their first lost of the season; however, Cashman and Jakubowski went 2 for 4 on the day.

The Hawks started their second game with relatively the same lineup with a few minor changes. On the mound for the Hawks were Randy Mower,'10. Also to see action from the pitching rubber was Mark Dolaghan,'10, and Mark Imbo,'08.

The Hawks registered one hit in the first two innings, while the Norfolk Spartans tallied two hits and one run.

Saint Joseph's rallied in the fourth inning to put the Hawks on the board with two runs.

The Hawks and the Spartans would go into the late innings with a few hits, but the score remained tied at two. The Hawks would score one run in the seventh inning to give them a 3-2 lead over the Spartans.

The game looked to be a lock for the Saint Joseph's baseball team with Wendle and Jakubowski both registering two hits apiece, but Norfolk State came from behind in the ninth inning with a two run rally. Leaving the final score 4-3 Norfolk State.

Entering into the third game of the series, the Hawks were behind 0-2, but again went out and gave their best effort.

The Hawks were tied 3-3 going into the seventh inning, but a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh proved fatal for the Hawks.
