Scholar Athletes Day, Feb. 11, 2007, was shared by athletes, family, friends and the Saint Joseph's Athletics community to celebrate and commend the academic achievements of the fall 2006 semester.

For this past semester, 221 student athletes had a 3.0 GPA or higher, nearly 51 percent.

Of those students, 72 were placed on the Atlantic 10 Commissioners Honor Roll while nine students received a 4.0 for the fall semester.

According to a statistic used by Mr. Don DiJulia, Director of Athletics, Saint Joseph's University Athletics is ranked among the top 20 percent of Division 1 in academic excellence.

During the ceremony, DiJulia commended the excellent work of the athletes in their dedication both on the field and in the classroom. He stated that the mission of Saint Joseph's Athletics is found in "challenging them [student athletes] like they have never been challenged before and we believe they will be the best they can be."

During the speech, DiJulia made reference to the four Jesuit principles and applied them to the hard work and excellent performance of the many students who challenge themselves each day to continually strive for excellence, to seek the Magis, to be a teammate for others, and to see God in all things.

Chris Bagley of Academic Services noted that "we are really fortunate at Saint Joseph's University to have coaches that focus on athletics but also on being great student athletes. When they come in that way, they stay that way."
