This past weekend, the Hawks' men's and women's track teams continued the home stretch of their indoor seasons by competing at the Lafayette-Rider Invitational at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City.
Though the meet was not scored, both teams had standout performances.
Teddy Meyers, '07, highlighted the men's results.
The Hawks' talented distance runner flew away from the mile-race competition by winning in 4:14.59, three seconds ahead of second place. Meyers followed up with a sixth-place finish in the 1000-meter race, running a 2:32.08.
"I felt pretty good being in control for the whole race," said Meyers. "I wish there would've been a little better competition, though, because I basically ran the entire race by myself."
SJU runner Kyle Murray, running unattached, added depth to the Hawks' long-distance efforts.
Murray ran a PR (personal record) in the 3000 meters by finishing in 8:41.50, good for second place.
The Hawks' 4x800 relay also competed well. The quartet of Stephen Young, '09, Brendan Kearney, '09, Jonathan Sclafani, '10, and Brian Doherty, '10, combined to run a 7:57.06 to finish in third place.
The Crimson & Gray's presence was also felt in the short-distance events. Bobby Staten, '08, ran a 49.36 in the 400-meter race that not only propelled him to second place overall, but also qualified him for the IC4A meet.
The 500-meter race also paid dividends for St. Joe's, as it placed two finishers in the top eight. Doherty ran a 1:04.99 to finish second, while Mike Tartara, '07, ran a 1:05.71 to fly into seventh place.
"We had a lot of good performances," said Brian O'Neill, '07, who ran a PR in the 800 by finishing in 2:00.87. "We definitely built off the progress we made at Yale. We were hoping to see more of what we saw there, which we did for the most part."
The girls, meanwhile, had outstanding performances from all over the track - and field.
The 4x400 led the way for the Crimson & Gray, winning the race in 3:57.76. Nicole McMullen, '10, Amanda Guthridge, '07, Kiersten Quinn, '10, and Julie Lentz, '07 helped lead the way for the Hawks' only win of the meet.
